About Reflexology

What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a wonderfully simple form of a natural, non invasive, complimentary healing art. The focus of reflexology is on the pressure points (reflexes) found on the hands and feet which correspond to all parts of our bodies- every system, organ and gland. When these reflex areas are stimulated using specific thumb, finger and hand techniques the body relax and resume a natural state of balance or homeostasis.
How Does Foot Reflexology Work?
As a holistic therapy, foot reflexology works by targeting a body as a whole. It is well know that approximately 75% of all health conditions or diseases are a result of an imbalance in nervous systems which creates stressful tension. Stress causes constriction of the blood vessels, a tightening which can lead to serious consequences. It impedes the blood/nerve flow to that body part, thus disease happens. Reflexology opens these pathways!
It is believed waste matter accumulates around reflex points in a form of grainy crystals or deposits. The goal is to break down those accumulating salt- like crystals/ deposits. Energy meridians then open up which enables blood to circulate more freely to where it is needed throughout the body. Opening those blocked nerve meridians flushes toxic waste matter into your bloodstream to be eliminated from your body.
Reflexology and You
Good health depends on a state of balance, equilibrium, as well as natural functioning of all our body systems. Most diseases have accumulated over a period of time, therefore they may take some time to reverse. Reflexology can help to reverse effects of stress or disease by promoting deep relaxation. That allows the nervous system to calm down enabling it to function optimally. In turn it increases a healthy blood flow to allow oxygen to reach our cells. Our internal system returns to its natural rhythm permitting energy to flow naturally. That is what "holistic" means- body, mind, and spirit are brought back into a state of balance.
While many people use reflexology as a way of relaxing the mind and body and counteracting stress, at the same time many doctors, consultants and other health care professional recognize reflexology as a well establishes, respected and effective therapy.
What can I Expect When I Come for a Reflexology Treatment?
On your first visit, I will have a preliminary discussion with you to evaluate your health and lifestyle. During a treatment you will remove your shoes (if you chose foot reflexology) and sit comfortably in a reclining chair. Various points are then stimulated on the feet in order to identify areas of tenderness or tension. Pressure is applied from the toes to the heel according to comfort. Cream or lotion may be used during the treatment and soothing music may accompany the session to make it as relaxing as possible. A typical treatment is 45 to 60 minutes long and a course of treatment may be recommended depending on the body's needs. The more you receive reflexology, the more benefits you are likely to notice.
Your session will leave you feeling tranquil and deeply relaxed or energized and rejuvenated. Some people initially experience fatigue after a session, but notice an increase of energy or lessening of stress over the following hours or days.
Who can Benefit from Reflexology?
Reflexology is suitable for all ages and many bring relief from a wide ranger of acute and chronic conditions. After you have completed a course of reflexology treatment for a specific condition, many people find it beneficial to continue with regular treatments in order to maintain health and well- being.
While many people use reflexology as a way of relaxing the mind and body and counteracting stress, at the same time many doctors, consultants and other health care professional recognize reflexology as a well established, respected and effective therapy.
With ever increasing levels of stress, it is important people take more responsibility for their own health care needs. Reflexology helps us to cope on a physical, mental and emotional level thereby encouraging us to heal and maintain health in all areas of our lives.
When Reflexology was Introduced in Our Country?
William H. Fitzgerald, M.D accompanied by Dr.Edwin Bowers, introduced it into North America in 1913. Dr. Fitzgerald was an ear, nose, and throat specialist. During the time, he discovered that applying pressure to one area had an anesthetic effect on another area. His findings, on many cases, also included an interesting fact that pressure along those zones not only helped to relieve pain but also root causes of that pain.
This therapy was then further researched and developed by Eunice D. Ingham (1899- 1974). Eunice was a nurse, as well as physiotherapist, during the 1930's and 1940's. She published two books on this subject. The first was in 1938, it is titled "Stories The Feet Can Tell" followed up in 1963 by "Stories The Feet Have Told." This therapy has continued to grow while gaining international acceptance under guidance of Dwight C. Byers (Eunice's nephew). He is the president of the International Institute of Reflexology.

This was my first experience with Reflexology and I had no idea what to expect, needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised! Mary Ann was extremely professional and has a natural gift of making people feel relaxed from the moment you arrive until you leave. She made an extra effort to carefully explain answers to questions I had with enthusiasm. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming and comfortable. After all my sessions, I left feeling more relaxed than when I had arrived and totally refreshed. I highly recommend meeting with MaryAnn, you will not be disappointed! Book a session for a loved one, they will love it too.

About 2 years ago i was in a car accident. Since that time I have had pain daily and limited movement of my neck and arm on the left side. When MaryAnn began reflexology she requested some volunteers to practice on, I immediately signed up! On my first visit I was able to "crack" my neck on the left side!!! This had not been done in a long while. After my next visit I had less pain and full movement to my neck and arm!!! I continued my visits with MaryAnn, they are the highlight of my week! I leave feeling refreshed, relaxed and pain free!!!

Does Reflexology work? Let this Doubting Thomas be the first to stand up to say a resounding YES IT DOES!!! I could write a book here but will mention only a few miracles that I still sit
and marvel at. First of all, I mentioned during the heat of the summer that I'd be happy when the muscles in my legs would stop twisting so I could have some relief from the pain. Not
everyone with MS has pain, but I'm one of the lucky ones, I guess. I also thought I was looking at a total knee replacement caused from arthritis. What I never thought I'd see is the effect
on my blood work which is showing the best results since the early 1990's! The emotional, physical, and spiritual changes are astounding and I am in awe in my current health status. I
continue to see MaryAnn who uses her remarkable talents to help promote healing in all aspects. I highly endorse her and the reflexology in which she is so gifted. Thank you, MaryAnn
for stepping out to help me. You're a gem and may others find the relief I'm finding in your treatments!

I began seeing MaryAnn a few months ago after receiving a coupon for discounted sessions from a friend of my. My friend knew of my horrible boughts with arthritis, fibromyalgia, stress and anxiety and told me to take the chance as nothing else was helping. After my first two sessions with MaryAnn I noticed I was calmer not so anxious just a bit more relaxed. This lasted for a few days. I was very excited. The next few sessions I was being bothered with fibromyalgia and once I got up I was feeling calm, and somewhat pain free. I had relief for about 6 hours and for anyone suffering from fibromyalgia knows 6 hours pain free is wonderful. I recently injured my sacral joints and was having terrible shooting pains in my legs and at the top of the butt muscles so fortunately I was due to see MaryAnn for a session. I left that session with no pain. Come to find out the leg pains were do to nerve compression and MaryAnn my Angel in disguise was able to waken those nerve even if it was for a little while! If anyone has second thoughts about trying Reflexology...don't . It is working for me! Every session brings longer moments of pain relief and calmness. I so look forward to my next sessions. An hour of peace, quiet and tranquility is worth every single penny spent! MaryAnn is the best......I mean that from the heart!

As I drove home today from my fifth reflexology session, I tried to analyze what it is about reflexology that keeps me going back. Yes, at 84 I have the usual assortment of aches and pains which her expertise helps alleviate. Yes, the soothing atmosphere of her cozy, spotlessly clean setting makes me feel comfortable. Yes, I relax and let my frustrations and concerns float away under her gentle manipulations. But a good whole body massage can do those things, so why is reflexology different? The answer, I suddenly realized, is that a massage relaxes me to the point where I really don’t even want to do anything. Reflexology energizes me! It’s more than just a physical sense of well-being; it’s mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Every bit of me feels good and I am ready to conquer the world again – at least my little corner of it! Mary Ann is a wonder worker and I am hooked on reflexology.

I had been having issues with pain in both of my feet for about a year or so and finally decided I needed to find out what was going on. I went to the doctors and they could not figure out why I was having pain like I was. I had an ex ray done on both feet seeing if maybe I was starting with some type of arthritis, but the ex ray did not show any signs. Every morning I would wake up and as I would start to walk my feet were in a lot of pain and very achy. I was given a gift certificate from my very best friend to try Reflexology. I had never heard of Reflexology and thought I would give it a try on my achy feet. I was truly amaze the experience I had. First, I have to say MaryAnn is the most kindest and sweetest person. She took the time asking questions and concerns and explained what Reflexology is all about. I was totally relaxed and couldn't wait to see how Reflexology might help me. As I left her home, MaryAnn said she would touch base with me in a couple if days to see how I was doing. The next morning I got up and I went downstairs to get ready for work. Not realizing until about 5 mins or so thinking oh my goodness, I just walked downstairs with no pain. This was not normal for me because I had been dealing with pain in my feet for over a year. I could not wait for MaryAnn to touch base with me in a couple of days, I had to text her and let her know my experience and what she has to offer with Reflexology was amazing. I have since gone back for another appointment and only say, if you have not tried Reflexology, give it a try. You also may find that Reflexology may help you with pain that just will not go away! Its worth a try, it has helped me and I am so glad I tried it. Thanks again MaryAnn, Hugs

I began reflexology sessions with Mary Ann Rateree, in October of 2013 when she generously offered a free session because I was in the midst of breast cancer treatment. I have been going to see her for reflexology sessions ever since. The sessions begin with her listening deeply and generously about my life. Then I often opt to have reflexology treatment done with my ears, hands and feet. It is extremely relaxing and comforting. I know it has provided a way for my body to detoxify from surgery and chemotherapy (for breast cancer). It eliminates my insomnia for a while, body aches. and joint pain. Reflexology with Mary Ann also releases toxic emotions and cleanses my system, including my mind and spirit. I find reflexology with Mary Ann to be an essential part of maintaining my health and well being.
